Chief Operating Officer (Transportation Industry)

The client has a successful 20 year tradition in the transportation and transloading industry with over 50 employees across five locations. Responsible for the operating, financial and quality performance of a highly profitable bulk transportation (rail and trucking), and transloading company’s services.  Develops and implements metrics for operations effectiveness and efficiency in delivery.  Identifies, grooms and develops leaders; models an excellence-focused and collaborative, professional culture; oversees and manages an organizational plan for staff training and development; strategically analyzes, plans and executes business priorities.  Reports to the CEO.

Position Summary:
  • Works with the CEO to establish objectives and growth strategies of the business and develop plans, policies and procedures to implement these directives.
  • Leads and oversees operations, sales, trucking, finance and human resources.
  • Develops improvement, investment and growth plans for company bulk transportation and transloading services.
  • Maintains awareness of the changing business environment thus educating the management team on best practices, new technologies and their impact on the market.
  • Sets and communicates clear, pre-established business and budget goals with outcome metrics.
  • Plans strategically for staff development, technology applications and facility, fleet, and equipment needs.
  • Grooms and develops staff and leaders through a business plan.
  • Manages and monitors business plan performance to goals; takes appropriate and timely action.
  • Meets or exceeds business plan and budget commitments.
  • Identifies key trends that impact transload, trucking and rail industry and company’s business models; plans and takes action appropriately.
  • Demonstrates strong communications and leadership skills.
  • Models company mission, vision, and values.  Builds positive working relationships internally and externally. Possesses strong interpersonal and relationship building skills.
  • Demonstrates strong analytical, financial and business development skills.
  • Represents the CEO in industry and community activities with professionalism.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in business, finance or related area required.  MBA or Master’s a plus.
  • Strong operations and business expertise and performance. 
  • Minimum 10 – 12 years’ senior management experience in the transportation (transload and trucking) industry.  Experience with rail transportation preferred.
  • Strong demonstrated business acumen, cost management techniques, financial and operational controls and analysis/reporting.
  • Proven results-oriented leader, leads by example through strong personal leadership, ability to wield positive impact, coaches and empowers teams to reach full potential, with exceptional interpersonal skills and impeccable ethics.
  • Provides high-level professional image daily and naturally represents organization as Brand Ambassador.
  • Exemplary communications:  verbal, written and presentation.
  • Highly collaborative team player with exceptional and demonstrated management skills.
